Indonesia and Cambodia Eye Stronger Trade and Investment Cooperation

IDXChannel - Indonesian Ambassador Santo Darmosumarto held a meeting with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sok Chenda Sophea in Phnom Penh on Wednesday, (3/1/2024)​.

“As we celebrate 65 Years of Indonesia-Cambodia relations, we must ensure that 2024 be filled with win-win achievements in our bilateral cooperation", said Santo in a media release.

Ambassador Darmosumarto also committed to ensuring that the historical ties between the two great nations be translated into concrete trade and investment cooperation that would directly benefit the peoples. 

He also highlighted his keenness in further bridging the two peoples, especially the two countries' youth, through education, cultural, and tourism cooperation.

Deputy Prime Minister Sok concurred in the significance of the 65th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations. He highlighted that stronger people-to-people contacts would result in greater business interactions, as the opportunities are abundant and in various sectors. Deputy Prime Minister Sok also proposed that the two countries work closer to pursue common goals in regional as well as multilateral forums.  

Indonesia is presently Cambodia's 6th largest trading partner with total bilateral trade reaching $965.24 million in November 2023. Cambodia's exports to Indonesia climbed to $70.56 million in 2023, which is a 112% jump from the previous year.  

September 2023 saw the first ever shipment of Cambodian rice to Indonesia, thus paving the way for more intensive bilateral economic interactions. (WHY)
