Indonesia Encourages Green Investment to Boost Sustainable Economic Growth

IDXChannel - Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi highlighted the importance of increasing investment in the clean energy sector as a driver of sustainable economic growth.
She delivered the keynote speech on the second day of the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (IISF) in Jakarta on 6 September.
"Renewable energy is the energy of the future. Energy is not merely a commodity, but a driver of economic growth. The world is moving to a low-carbon economy and Indonesia wants to be part of it," she said in her her speech.
She emphasised that sustainable development is key to future prosperity. Indonesia continues to use diplomacy to promote sustainable efforts and global cooperation to achieve the SDGs and implement the Paris Agreement.
"With the changes in the global economy, diplomacy has an important role in realising a sustainable future," Retno said.
Retno emphasised three main priorities that must be fulfilled for a sustainable future. First, investing and building green energy. Second, capitalising on the huge potential of the blue economy. Third, the Indonesian Foreign Minister emphasised to focus on carbon sequestration.
"As the third largest tropical rainforest country in the world, Indonesia has the capacity to absorb large amounts of emissions. With the lowest deforestation rate in the last 20 years, we can be sure that Indonesia is on the right track," she said.
Furthermore, Retno explained that Indonesia has endorsed a long-term strategy for low carbon and climate resilience by 2050 as well as a roadmap to achieve the net zero emission target by 2060 or sooner.
In closing, Retno reiterated that all parties play an important role in efforts towards a low carbon economy and confirmed Indonesia's commitment to strengthen collaboration in order to realise a sustainable future.
IISF 2024 was held at the Jakarta Convention Center from 5 to 6 September and was attended by thousands of people from the government, private sector, philanthropy, NGOs, experts, and academics from within and outside the country. (Wahyu Dwi Anggoro)
