Indonesia-Malaysia Agree to Fight Discrimination Against Palm Oil
Indonesia and Malaysia, the world's largest palm oil producer, agreed to work together to combat "discrimination" against palm oil commodities.
IDXChannel - Indonesia and Malaysia, the world's largest palm oil producer, agreed to work together to combat "discrimination" against palm oil commodities.
The cooperation was carried out after the two held a meeting at the Presidential Palace, Bogor, West Java, Monday (9/1/2023). This is the first foreign trip for PM Anwar Ibrahim since being elected last November.
Jokowi, who is familiarly called Jokowi, said the two countries would "combat discrimination against palm oil" and "strengthen cooperation through the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries" to address concerns.
The European Union plans to phase out palm oil-based fuels by 2030 as they are thought to be linked to deforestation. In their bilateral meeting, Anwar and Jokowi signed eight memorandums of understanding covering shipping, export-import financing, green energy, battery industry development, which they said they hoped would deepen cross-border trade and investment.
The leaders also discussed the development of Indonesia's planned new capital, Nusantara, with Anwar submitting 11 letters of interest from Malaysian companies related to possible investments in the new city, located in the Indonesian part of Borneo. The new capital could boost regional development, Anwar said, with Malaysia's states of Sabah and Sarawak located in the Malaysian part of Borneo island.
"We hope that the development of the capital city will bring greater benefits to the wider region, including in Sabah and Sarawak," he said as reported by Reuters, Monday (9/1/2023).
The two leaders will also discuss the rights of migrant workers after Indonesia last year imposed a temporary ban on recruitment to Malaysia where the majority of Indonesian migrant workers live, Malaysia's foreign ministry said.
