IDXChannel - Indonesian Presiden Prabowo Subianto and United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Sunday (17/11/2024).
"The Secretary-General appreciated Indonesia’s active role on matters of regional and global interest, including its contributions to UN peacekeeping," the UN Secretariat said in a media release.
The meeting was held ahead of the G20 Leaders' Summit. The event will take place in Rio de Janeiro on 18-19 November.
"They discussed the need for a reform of the international financial architecture," the UN Secretariat stated.
The G20 Leaders' Summit will be held at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro on 18-19 November. The main topics of the event are: social inclusion, reform of international institutions, and energy transitions.
The opening ceremony of the summit will feature the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a Brazilian initiative aimed at mobilizing countries and international organizations to accelerate efforts in the fight against hunger and poverty by 2030.
In the afternoon, the focus of the discussion—which will be restricted to heads of state—will be the global governance reform, a central theme in Brasil's G20 presidency.
The proposal is to discuss how to modernize the main international institutions, such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization, so that they reflect contemporary realities and promote fairer and more efficient governance.
The debate on energy transitions will be held on the second day of the summit. The world is facing an unprecedented climate crisis, and the G20 countries, which represent the majority of carbon emissions, will discuss strategies to promote a greener and more sustainable global economy.
