IDXChannel - The Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) said that Indonesia could take advantage of its ASEAN chairmanship this year to develop an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in the region.

According to GAIKINDO General Secretary Kukuh Kumara, Indonesia is able to lead the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem in the ASEAN region. This is because Indonesia has abundant natural resources.

"If we cooperate with other countries in the region, we are optimistic that the electric vehicle ecosystem can be accelerated," Kukuh told IDX Channel Market Review program on Tuesday (9/5/2023).

Moreover, Kukuh  believes that ASEAN is able to develop electric vehicles not only motorbikes or cars, but also buses and  trucks.

"So net zero emissions can be achieved if Indonesia continues to commit to developing this in the long term," he added.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said, all economic ministers who attended the 22nd ASEAN Economic Community Council Meeting on Sunday agreed to support the ASEAN Leaders' Declaration on Developing Regional Electric Vehicle Ecosystem. The document is expected to be approved by Heads of State at the 42nd ASEAN Summit.

The declaration, which is an Indonesian initiative, will serve as a guide for cooperation and collaboration to develop a safe, efficient and sustainable electric vehicle ecosystem in the region. (WHY)
