ASEAN and Japan Agree to Promote Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr Kao Kim Hourn met with Foreign Minister of Japan Kamikawa Yoko in Tokyo on Tuesday (24/10/2023).

"Dr Kao and FM Kamikawa exchanged views on ASEAN-Japan relations and relevant regional issues," the ASEAN Secretariat stated in a media release.

To further advance the long-standing partnership, they also agreed to work closely to promote the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in conjunction with this year’s 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relations. 

Dr Kao assured FM Kamikawa of ASEAN Secretariat’s continued support in preparation for the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit to be held in Tokyo in December 2023.

At the invitation of the Government of Japan, the Secretary-General of ASEAN will visit Japan from 24 to 29 October. Dr Kao will hold bilateral meetings with key cabinet members of Japan including Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.

Dr Kao will also attend the 5th ASEAN-Japan Smart Cities Network High Level Meeting and the ASEAN-Japan Tourism Ministers’ Special Dialogue in 2023. This visit takes place at an important juncture as ASEAN and Japan celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their dialogue relations this year. (WHY)
