IDXChannel - The Indo-Pacific Plastics Innovation Network (IPPIN) held Plastics Innovation Hub Indonesia’s Demo Day in Jakarta this week. The event showcased game-changing solutions to combat plastic waste.
The IPPIN Indonesia Chapter is a partnership between the Australian Government, including Australia’s national science agency CSIRO, Indonesia's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Indonesia's National Plastics Action Partnership and Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency.
“Australia and Indonesia share economic and environmental interests in addressing challenges related to plastic pollution. Programs like IPPIN are crucial to empower entrepreneurs to develop new and lasting solutions,” said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams in a media release.
Demo Day is the culmination of 13 weeks’ intensive coaching as part of the IPPIN Accelerator+ program, where entrepreneurs have been developing businesses and innovations aimed at reducing plastic waste.
The innovations on display this year include remote waste management practices, marine debris monitoring and even gaming to incentivise real-world waste collection.
“For several years we have been committed to the success of this program and will continue to connect entrepreneurs, with the education sector and key industry players,” said Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology at Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Abdul Haris.
According to Wahid Supriyadi, the Chair of the Indonesia National Plastic Action Partnership, the flow of plastic waste into Indonesia's oceans is projected to increase by 30 persen to around 800,000 tonnes by 2025.
"I am excited to see brave, bold business solutions to tackle this urgent problem alongside our Indonesian and Australian partners,” he said.
