Jokowi Meets US Congress Members to Discuss Global Supply Chains, Energy Transition

IDXChannel - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received members of the United States (US) congress on Wednesday (12/4/2023) at  Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. During the meeting, the US delegation expressed their commitment to enhancing cooperation.

During the meeting, the President were accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi and Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya.

The US delegation consisted of Senator Jeff Merkley, Senator Chris Van Hollen, Representative Lloyd Doggett, Representative Praila Jayapal, Representative Ilhan Omar, US Ambassador to Indonesia Sung Yong Kim, and USAID Mission Director Jeffery Cohen.

"Because they understand that Indonesia is a very important partner in the region," Retno told reporters after the meeting.

President Jokowi conveyed the Indonesian government's strong commitment to climate change and environmental issues. The Head of State mentioned a number of achievements by the Indonesian government regarding these two issues.

"Including a reduction in forest fires," said Retno.

On this occasion, the President also asked for support from the US Congress on a number of issues, including  the extension of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) facility.

"The president also hopes that Indonesia can become part of the global supply chains for America and the world. The president also asked  the United States to support energy transition," said Retno.

Apart from that, Retno said, the US Congress members also appreciated Indonesia's success in holding the G20 summit last year. They also openly supported Indonesia's chairmanship in ASEAN this year.

Prior to meeting with President Jokowi, Retno said the delegation held meetings with herself and the Minister of Environment and Forestry. Tomorrow, they will also visit IKN Nusantara.

"So tomorrow there will be a visit to IKN Nusantara," said Retno.
