IDXChannel - The Indonesian government extended its deepest sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of Vanuatu after a big earthquake struck the Pacific country.
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu, centered 30 kilometers west of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, on 17 December 2024.
"Prayers are with those still unaccounted for, hoping for their safety, and for the evacuation and recovery process to proceed smoothly," the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (18/12/2024).
"The Indonesian Foreign Minisry will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with relevant parties to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens and provide necessary assistance," it stated.
The earthquake caused damage to buildings and public infrastructure, disrupted clean water supplies, and hindered internet access. It also rendered the main port and airport in Port Vila non-operational, except for humanitarian aid purposes.
