IDXChannel - The last day of the 42nd ASEAN Summit began with a retreat session. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) raised the issue of Myanmar at today’s meeting.
In 2021, ASEAN issued the Five Point Consensus (5PC) to help end the conflict in Myanmar. However, Jokowi acknowledged that the implementation of the 5PC was still not satisfactory.
“As chair, Indonesia continuosly strives for progress in the implementation of the 5PC, and through engagements with various parties urge for an inclusive dialogue, call for the cessation of violence, facilitate conclusion of the Joint Needs Assesment (JNA) through AHA centre, and deliver the humanitarian assistance,” he said during the opening of the retreat session at Meruorah Hotel, Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara on Thursday (11/5/2023).
“However, I must speak candidly. On Implementation of the 5PC, there has not been significant progress. Therefore, ASEAN unity is required to decide on the next steps,” he added.
According to Jokowi, the issue of Myanmar must not hinder development in the region, especially the acceleration of ASEAN community building.
