Indonesian Foreign Minister Says Membership in BRICS a Strategic Diplomatic Move
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has stated that Indonesia's accession to BRICS is part of the country's active diplomacy.
IDXChannel - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has stated that Indonesia's accession to BRICS is part of the country's active diplomacy.
This was conveyed by Sugiono in his speech at the Annual Press Statement of the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs 2025, held on 10 January.
"And this month, Indonesia has officially joined as a member of BRICS," he said.
"In less than three months, the BRICS members agreed to decide and accept Indonesia as a full member. Here, we see that Indonesia is viewed as an important country that should be able to join soon," he added.
He also emphasized that Indonesia's membership in BRICS is a tangible manifestation of the principle of an independent and active foreign policy, not a deviation.
"Because this decision is not the result of an overnight effort, but rather the fruit of Indonesia's decades-long diplomacy, marked by its endeavors, consistency, and steadfastness," he added.
As a member of BRICS, Indonesia will ensure that the bridge of interests between developing countries and the Indo-Pacific region remains intact.
In addition, Indonesia's active participation in BRICS will also align with its active role in other groups such as the G20, APEC, IPEF, MIKTA, and CPTPP, as well as its accession stage as an OECD member. (Wahyu Dwi Anggoro)
